Opening In-Game

To enable the console in-game you need to boot up Team Fortress 2 and click game options and then head on over to the “Keyboard” section. Here you need to click on “Advanced” and enable “Enable developer console”. You can now click “Ok”, and under “Keyboard” scroll down to the bottom and bind the console to a key.

Opening using Launch Options

Open Steam and go to your library. Find Team Fortress 2, right click on it and go to “Properties”. Under the “General” tab click “Set Launch Options…” and paste this:

-console

Now click “Ok” and the TF2 console will now open the next time you boot up TF2.

What can I use the TF2 developer console for?

You can use the TF2 developer console to change and tweak the game to your preferences. It’s also way faster to open the TF2 console and type this:

volume .6

than having to click through all the game setting to turn down your volume. Also, by enabling the developer console you have access to a lot more settings that you cannot find in the game options. You can for example set up a LAN server and enable god mode to troll your friends. Do you want to learn more about what you can use the console to? Maybe consider reading this [to be added].

I enabled sv_cheats 1 in TF2, will I get banned?

No. If you’ve tried to open the TF2 console and enable “sv_cheats 1” on your local server, or any other (even official Valve servers) wont get you banned. This command has been added so you can tweak your server more and enable features like god mode or other features that are normally disabled.
