TF2 How To Create Autoexec.cfg, a video tutorial by tf2guides.

What is autoexec.cfg?

Autoexec.cfg is a config file which is saved within the TF2 files. What this file essentially does is that it automatically configures TF2 when it’s booted up. Inside this file you can have custom settings like keybindings or commands which optimizes TF2 giving you more FPS. If you want to learn how to create an autoexec.cfg for TF2, continue reading.

How do I create an autoexec.cfg file?

First off you need to head on over to your Steam library and find TF2. Right click on Team Fortress 2, click “PROPERTIES” and then click on “LOCAL FILES” at the top and lastly “BROWSE LOCAL FILES”. Once you’ve click that you need to go inside of the “tf” folder and inside of that “cfg”. This is the folder where your autoexec file needs to be located. You can now create a new file by right clicking and clicking new text document. Guide continues under the config.

// b4nny config (edited Rhapsody config)

cl_interp 0
cl_interp_ratio 1
cl_lagcompensation 1
cl_pred_optimize 2
cl_smooth 0
cl_smoothtime 0.01
cl_updaterate 66
rate 60000

cl_playerspraydisable 1
r_spray_lifetime 0

r_shadowmaxrendered 0
r_shadowrendertotexture 0
r_shadows 1
nb_shadow_dist 400

// Plus way more lines...

Once you are done editing the file you need to click “File” and then “Save as”. The name of the file should be “autoexec.cfg” and as “Filetype” you need to have as “All files”.

When the file has been saved you need to go into the TF2 properties again, like shown above, but this time instead of going to “LOCAL FILES” you should navigate to “GENERAL” if you are not already there. Click “SET LAUNCH OPTIONS” and enter this:

-exec autoexec
